Sarona Food Market, Tel Aviv

No overheating
The Sarona Food Market is located in the best
district of Tel Aviv as a shopping arcade between
high-rise buildings. It was necessary to design the
1,000 sqm of roof glazing to maintain the visual
contact with the sky and simultaneously to avoid
secondary heat radiation from the glass roof into
the shopping arcade. The design task of the

daylight systems was to reflect the intense sunlight
back into the sky and to avoid glare in the luxury 60° apartments of the skyscrapers.
40°
In a first design, the RETROFlex 25 mm louvers were positioned in a specific orientation depending on the direction and tilt of the roof (see right). Finally it was decided to install 80 mm wide RETROFlex louvers flatly between the glass panes with a gap of 20 %. The lower side of the louvers is black, which fits well with the atmosphere of the food market in the hot climate of Israel. The feared heat radiation from the glass roof into the arcade is completely avoided.
