Technologiezentrum Ruhr

Technologiezentrum Ruhr – Germany
Project overview

The Technologiezentrum Ruhr in Bochum is a 12 000 m² facility that provides flexible spaces for start‑ups and technology companies. Designed by SSP AG, the building prioritises climate adaptation and sustainability, incorporating green façades, natural ventilation and advanced shading systems

Design challenge

Start‑up companies require adaptable spaces that can evolve with changing needs. The building’s design needed to support various layouts while maintaining comfortable indoor climates. Solar control was essential due to the building’s large glazed areas and the need to reduce energy costs for tenants. The shading system had to integrate with operable windows and escape doors.

RetroSolar strategy

The project uses a combination of shading devices: openable windows and escape doors are fitted with hand‑crank RETROLux 25 mm blinds, while fixed glazed areas employ motorised RETROLux 50 mm blinds

. This arrangement ensures that shading is available wherever needed and that the blinds can be operated manually or automatically depending on the façade element. The system supports the building’s cradle‑to‑cradle and sufficiency principles by emphasising durability and adaptability.

Building physics and performance

The reflective blinds reduce solar heat gain and improve daylight distribution, contributing to comfortable working conditions. The ability to open windows and doors with integrated blinds enhances natural ventilation, reducing reliance on mechanical cooling. The motorised blinds adjust automatically based on solar conditions, while the manual blinds allow occupants to fine‑tune shading. The combination of natural and technological elements supports the building’s sustainability goals.

Architectural outcome and significance

Technologiezentrum Ruhr demonstrates a nuanced approach to shading that accommodates different types of façade elements. The integration of RetroSolar technology with operable windows enhances flexibility and occupant control. The project provides a blueprint for adaptable, sustainable office buildings that can support the dynamic needs of start‑ups and other innovative enterprises.
